FREE RADICALS
Every day the millions of cells that make up our bodies
are exposed to the ravages of air pollution, food chemicals,
toxic substances and stress. In addition to these health destroyers,
every breath we take produces damaging substances called free radicals.
If left unchecked, these free radicals cause damage to the cells of our body -
a leading cause of disease and illness - and are thought to contribute dramatically to the aging process.
A PIONEERING BREAKTHROUGH
in phytonutrient and antioxidant supplementation. Combining the power of the
phytonutrients lycopene and sulforaphane with the antioxidant strength of

Diet & Lifestyle --
Fruit & Vegetables
Fruit & Vegetable Survey:
Nearly half the UK population could be at a higher risk
of heart disease and cancer because they eat less than
half the recommended daily portions of fruit and
vegetables, according to a survey.
The UK poll - which asked 997 adults about their eating habits - found that 49% only had one or two portions, even though research has shown that five can cut the risk of heart disease and cancer.
Overall, only 13% of men and 21% of women managed to meet this target, while 48% said they found it hard to meet the recommendations.
The survey also revealed regional variations, with southerners more likely to meet the target than those in the North.
Although 59% of people in the south west of England ate
fewer than two portions a day, 23% of southerners overall
managed to eat five, compared to only eight per cent of
those living in Yorkshire and Humberside.

News Update:
Few Eat Their Fruits and Vegetables
Fewer than one-fourth (23%) of Americans eat the five servings of fruits and vegetables recommended by the National
Cancer Institute to help prevent cancer. That's only a slight improvement since 1990, when the figure stood at 19%, according to
a recent report in the American Journal of Public Health.

News Update:
An Apple a Day
The adage may be old, but modern science proves that apples can help keep the doctor away. Apples are high in fiber and rich in the powerful flavonoid quercetin. Quercetin has been found to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer and may protect the arteries and heart through its antioxidant activity. Apple juice, however, loses 80% of its quercetin in processing, so choose whole fruit over juice.

LYCOPENE APPEARS TO HELP PREVENT PROSTATE CANCER.
The carotenoid LYCOPENE appears to help prevent prostate cancer. Tomatoes contain the most lycopene; cooked and processed tomatoes have more absorbable lycopene than raw ones.
University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter. Volume 6, Issue 1, October 1999
(Remember: Each serving of Nutria®
contains the equivalent lycopene value of one complete serving of fresh tomatoes)!
News Update:
LYCOPENE MAKES HEADLINES ACROSS THE CONTINENT.
The powerful phytonutrient LYCOPENE has been in the press yet
again as several newspapers have recently featured articles describing
its many potential health benefits. According to the Mayo Clinic,
lycopene has twice the disease-fighting potency of its beter-known
relative, beta-carotene. As well, several recent studies have shown
lycopene to be effective in preventing tumors as well as reducing
the progression of existing tumors. A study of 2,700 Italians showed
that lycopene was linked to a reduction of up to 60 percent
in digestive tract tumors. Another study, conducted in the United
States, showed a 21 to 34 percent reduction in prostate cancer
for men who consumed lycopene more than twice per week.
The human body cannot make lycopene, so we must get it from our diet. The most potent food source of lycopene is the tomato.
However, nutritional surveys have consistently shown that 90% of the
population are not getting the suggested daily servings of fruits
and vegetables, including tomatoes.
HEAT IT UP!
Research has also shown that lycopene from cooked tomatoes is better
absorbed by the body than from raw tomatoes. the heat involved in the
cooking process helps release the lycopene from the tomato increasing
the amount available for absorption by the body. It is important to
know that the lycopene used in Lifestyles "NUTRIA" phytonutrient
supplement has been subjected to heat before being encapsulated.
With research showing the mounting health benefits of lycopene,
supplementing this important phytonutrient is more important than
ever. Plus it's one more good reason why everyone needs "NUTRIA"!
Another News Update:
LYCOPENE IN THE NEWS:
Once again the phytonutrient lycopene has found its way in the
newspapers the world over as a new study confirms the link between
this potent nutrient and various forms of cancer. A study done
recently at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan found
that men who suffered from prostate cancer and received lycopene in
the form of a supplement showed decreases in tumor size. The cancer
was also found to be less aggressive after the lycopene
supplementation.
This study, and many others like it, has shown the tremendous benefits that can be received by increasing your daily intake of lycopene. However, as the study pointed out, eating fresh tomatoes may not be the answer as lycopene is poorly absorbed from fresh produce. Lycopene requires mild heat and must be consumed with a small amount of fat in order to be properly absorbed by the body. The researchers also pointed out that supplements are necessary in order to reach a beneficial level of daily lycopene consumption.
As well as working to slow down cancer growth, lycopene also has a very significant preventative ability. After analyzing the study one of the researchers stated "it is remarkable that lycopene may have both therapeutic and preventative value".
